A Milton woman beat the qualifying deadline Friday and will face Santa Rosa County School Board District 1 incumbent Diane Scott in the November election.
The Santa Rosa County School Board recently approved adding six minutes to each school day for students. Locally, parents seemed more concerned about school start times than the additional instruction time. Holley-Navarre Primary and Holley Navarre Intermediate Schools both begin instruction at 7:30 a.m. West Navarre Primary and West Navarre Intermediate Schools both begin at 8:15 a.m. In contrast, Navarre High and Holley Navarre Middle School begin at 9:15 and 9:25 a.m. respectively.
Wil Pergande from the Gulf Breeze Sertoma Club stopped by the office to tell us about the 24th Annual Family Fishing Rodeo that is being held Saturday and Sunday at Shoreline Park in Gulf Breeze. Proceeds from the tournament benefit a host of community organizations that help children and their families. There is a really impressive list of recipients on their website, familyfishingrodeo.com. Santa Rosa County commissioners have decided to add a third possible location for a proposed new judicial facility to this year’s ballot. Now voters can choose between buying a $1.4 million site in Pea Ridge, using free land offered in East Milton or constructing a new building behind the current courthouse. Voters will also decide whether or not they want to fund the project through a temporary sales tax.
Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC) Director Kate Wilkes has announced she will be retiring effective Aug. 1, 2014. Wilkes notified members of the TDC Board of Directors via a two-sentence email June 11.
Milt Miller grew up in Detroit where his dad, Denver, worked for 43 years on the Wabash Railroad. His mom, Esther, was housewife, but she worked raising Milt, his older half-brother, Warren Sessler, and sisters, Grace, a retired nurse, and Marilyn, also a housewife.
Area churches did their best to make sure dads felt special June 15. And, if the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then Risen Savior Lutheran Church and Momentum Church hit the mark in its own special way.
Some might consider this a “slow news” week, but I’m OK with that. We have already had our share of unexpected news in the past few months. There is a chance that by the time you read this Jayer Williamson will be appointed by Governor Rick Scott to sit where his father once sat as a Santa Rosa County Commissioner. It will be great to have our fifth county commissioner back. Jayer has big shoes to fill but the good news is – he knows that. He will faithfully and dutifully serve his seat to the benefit of the citizens of Santa Rosa County. He will be there for us, not for his own personal agenda.
One business that suffered extensive damage from flooding in late April reopened its doors last week, while other businesses that were hit by strong winds in late March continued to struggle with roof leaks and water damage.
