DeSantis signs controversial ‘parent’s rights’ bill, draws ire, praise

On Mar. 28, Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1557 also known as the Parental Rights in Education Bill. The bill, which has garnered controversy, requires district school boards to comply with provisions of law for notifying student’s parents of specified information. According to the description on the Florida Senate website, the bill also prohibits classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in grade levels Kindergarten through third and authorizes parents to bring legal action against school districts.

Cassie Carli still missing, search continues into weekend

Last Sunday night, Cassie Carli went missing sometime after 7 p.m. from Navarre Beach.

Carli was at Juana’s boat ramp to conduct a child custody swap with Marcus Spanevelo, Carli’s former partner and the father of their daughter, Saylor.

According to Sheriff Bob Johnson, Spanevelo is the last person to see her.

Butterfly houses continue battle, look to future

Keep Santa Rosa Beautiful, a 501c3 non-profit based in Milton, will be receiving their vivarium for the new butterfly house at the T.W. Jones house sometime this week.

The vivarium will hold butterflies in it and will come in the form of a kit that must be assembled.

Spring Jam springs back with sold out crowd

After being postponed two years in a row due to the pandemic, Spring Jam county music fest made a huge comeback to Juana’s Pagodas on Navarre Beach March 20.

This was the third time Cat Country hosted this beach concert that benefits Santa Rosa Kids’ House, a local nonprofit on a mission to help stop the hurt of child abuse.

The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has changed up their “Tunes by the Dunes” concert series.

This year there will be a six-week spring series kicking off next Thursday, March 10, and a six-week summer series.

Fire destroys home in Holley

Flames engulfed the residence of a house in Holley March 1 as smoke ascended from the roof, visible from Highway 87. Sirens wailed as four different fire departments flocked to the site.
