Water system: Only official proxies in board election

The question of which proxy votes will count in the Holley Navarre Water System annual meeting election was at the center of a special meeting held Monday, Feb. 10. The controversy began with reports that proxy forms not issued by the system were being handed out at places around Navarre.

A proxy is a form which authorizes another member to vote on your behalf. Through HNWS, proxy forms are given out after membership in the system is verified. With a different proxy form, some members argued, there might be an opening for fraud or unethical practices related to obtaining votes on behalf of candidates.

On Monday, Jan. 20, Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States for the second time. While no one fully knows what will happen over the next four years, Trump did indicate a desire to increase tariffs on countries sending their goods to America. In simple terms, a tariff is a tax on imported goods.

We are working on finishing up all three of our newspapers on Monday while wondering if the driver is going to be able to bring them to us from Jackson, Mississippi, on Tuesday evening like he normally does. We attempted to print earlier to get ahead of the storm, but the company that owns the press prioritizes their own papers first – of course – and no can do. They were really nice about it – but the facts are the facts. And we would do the same if we owned the printing press. There is a good chance you are reading this – at best on Thursday, but probably on Friday.

Northwest Florida is largely known for its white sandy beaches and emerald waters, but its also a hub for military veterans and Active-Duty personnel. The area is home to five major military installations, which includes NAS Pensacola, NAS Whiting Field, Hurlburt Field, Eglin Air Force Base, and Tyndall Air Force Base.

Water utility says water safe to drink

In the days following a “catastrophic” water main break Dec. 20 along Highway 87, residents within Navarre and surrounding areas began to complain of problems with their water. Some claimed the water made them itch or irritated their skin, others claimed it had a funny taste and smell, and some went as far as testing their water using pool testing strips.

K9, deputy involved crash spotlights emergency vehicle law

A K9 unit with Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was involved in Dec. 27 crash at the intersection of Edgewood Drive and Highway 98. Deputy D. Hopkins of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was injured in the crash, sustaining a concussion, head laceration, and other minor injuries from the incident.

Hopkins’ K9 Partner, K9 Riggs, had no apparent injuries, according to the agency.

Happy New Year!

Personally, I don’t make resolutions because if I’m resolved to do something – I am going to start making changes right away and not wait for the new year. True confessions: I weighed myself for the first time in a long time today, and my suspicions were confirmed. I’m up about eight pounds. I was avoiding the truth or the facts because I didn’t want to deal with them until after the holiday.
