Something extraordinarily special happens when you bring children into an assisted living community to socialize with the residents. It is difficult to tell who benefits the most, the children or the seniors.
Less than two months after receiving the green light from the Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners, the Rotary Club of Navarre has safety rescue tubes at every walk over on Navarre Beach. This first-of-a-kind project for the state of Florida is not new to Rotary International. The Navarre Rotary Club is modeling its project after one initiated by fellow Rotarians in Hawaii and North Carolina. “We appreciate what our lifeguards do, but they can’t be there 24-7,” said Rotarian TJ Goulet at a ribbon cutting held this week. With the lifeguards standing down as of Nov. 1, the rescue tubes couldn’t have come at a better time.
The proposed sale of Navarre Beach Water and Sewer would probably involve building a new pipe across Santa Rosa Sound to transfer sewage for treatment at the mainland plant owned by Holley-Navarre Water System.
Marvin Eugene Darby Jr., 20, of Andorra Street in Navarre was arrested Oct. 15 for alleged obstruction of justice in connection with an upcoming burglary trial involving himself and Devin Michael Colonel, 21, of Parkridge Drive in Navarre.
ROLLING FORK, Miss.—The chosen theme for this year’s National Newspaper Week is “Power of the Press,” and that power, it seems to me, is a very relative thing.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, about half of home fire deaths are a result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most are sleeping. So this year’s theme for the 2015 National Fire Prevention Week is “Hear the beep where you sleep,” encouraging people to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home.
Longtime Navarre Pullum YMCA Branch Director, Dottie Thomas, resigned last week much to the surprise of her board of directors. Thomas has been at the Navarre YMCA for eight years and has been the branch director for five years. During that time the Navarre YMCA has grown to the point that it has outgrown its facility and an expansion is planned for 2016. “We hate to see her leave. She has done an amazing job. I hope she reconsiders and I’m working toward that end,” said Maurie Reynolds, chairman of the Pullum Family YMCA Board of Directors. Reynolds also emphasized that the expansion of the Navarre YMCA needed to move forward regardless.
Members of the Navarre Beach Chamber of Commerce take issue with Santa Rosa County Commissioner Rob Williamson’s recent depiction of the organization as lacking stability.
At about 12:30 a.m. on March 7, 2013, Santa Rosa County deputies received a call about suspicious activities on Larker Woods Road in east Navarre. What they found when they arrived was 31-year old shooting victim Philip Davenport in the front yard of his home. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Rich Aloy.
