Nina Malave has taken on a bigger role with the Navarre Raider volleyball team this season, particularly at the net where she’s become one of the teams better blockers.

It was the first day of batting practice with the Windy City ThunderBolts and Michael Sandle, in his words, ‘made a horrible read’ in centerfield.


“I was running and the ball flies over my head,” Sandle said. It was a reset moment where I’m like, alright, I’m back in it (pro baseball). I really take pride in defense as much as I do my offense.”

You could feel the energy on the field and sideline. Even in the stands as the fans cheered. It felt like Navarre football again after the Raiders blocked a punt on Mosley’s opening drive at Bennett C. Russell Stadium Friday night.


But that early shot of momentum never carried through the game.
