St. Patrick’s Cathedral restored in time for pope’s visit

New York — A three-year restoration project at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York and one of the country’s most well-known churches, is coming to an end just in time for a late September visit from Pope Francis. Most of the scaffolding has already been taken down and officials are steadfast in saying it will be done in time.

Out and About

We just enjoyed a beautiful Labor Day weekend in Navarre, and the “official” end of summer. However, that isn’t the case for those of us that live here. One of the best-kept secrets – if there is one anymore – is how beautiful Navarre Beach is during this time of year when most of our visitors have headed home. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy our beautiful water and shores for months after the “official” end of summer.  And, if you are a surfer, the season has just begun. This time of year, in tourism lingo, is called, “The Shoulder Season.” This is the time between when the tourists leave and the tourists (Snowbirds) return in December.  And – this is the reason that “Beaches to Woodlands” came into existence.

Offended by the offenders list?

In this week’s issue of Navarre Press, you will find a spread with photos, names and addresses of sexual offenders and predators registered in Navarre and Gulf Breeze.  We have published this every year, and a majority of our readers let us know they appreciate us printing the information.  A couple of people have told us that they pull the pages out of the paper and keep it for reference.

All-star concert to raise funds for Black Hawk memorial

Downtown Milton’s historic Imogene Theatre will be the stage for the Southern Rock All-Star Jam Sept. 11 and 12.  Members from the iconic bands Molly Hatchet, Atlanta Rhythm Section and Georgia Satellites and others will join forces on stage for the special event to raise money for the Black Hawk memorial.

Blue ribbons show support for law enforcement

It was a simple message.  “Would our town be interested in showing support for police officers on September 26th-30th? Many other cities in the U.S. are showing their support on this month. I am willing to make lots of blue bows if I can get the ribbon this week. We could “paint the town blue” to show our appreciation,” wrote Tina Bridges on a local social media site.
