United Way offers free tax filing program

United Way of Escambia County is offering free online or in-person tax filing options for those with a household income of $62,000 or less in Escambia or Santa Rosa counties. Last year, the impact of United Way’s tax programs exceeded $5.1 million.

Quilting group brings joy to local veterans

With so many of our country’s vital military personnel working and living inside of our local area, citizens in Santa Rosa County have long been involved in programs dedicated to giving back to our local veterans. The families and friends of these American servicemen and servicewomen have in fact been some of the most active participants in veteran-focused activities. As a community, citizens of Santa Rosa County have shown an extensive record of heartfelt pride and support for all of our veterans and military personnel.

Additional drug-enforcement funding for county

The I-10 corridor flows through Santa Rosa County, and unfortunately, that means illegal drugs may as well.  The proximity of the corridor and other criteria led to Santa Rosa County being added to the Gulf Coast High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program.  There are 32 such programs across the United States, including Hawaii, and in the case of Santa Rosa County, the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office requested to be part of it.

Entrepreneurial spirits running high in Navarre

In 2015, Santa Rosa County witnessed the growth of many new homes and businesses in the area. With new families and opportunities arriving steadily each year, growth for previous years has become a popular subject for public elation. However, the prospect of the upcoming year has left many citizens speculating as to whether this kind of financial growth can be expected to continue.

Surprise renaming of Navarre Park fizzles

Without consulting key stakeholders or polling constituents, Commissioner Rob Williamson placed an agenda item on the County Commissioners’ agenda to rename Navarre Park to Navarre Memorial Park only to pull it after hearing the sentiments of the other commissioners and the public. The only notice given was in the backup materials provided for the meeting which offered less than 24 “business hours’” notice before the meeting commenced. 

Black Hawk Memorial groundbreaking set

Shortly after the training crash of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter into the waters of the Navarre sound on March 10, the Leadership Santa Rosa Class 29 began planning a memorial project in memory of the 11 service members killed.  The Navarre Black Hawk Memorial is projected to cost nearly $100,000 and will be placed to the left of the large pavilion in Navarre Park.
