At around 6:15 p.m. Monday evening a line of severe thunderstorms steamrolled through Navarre leaving power outages, trees down and other damage in its wake. The storm began in southeast Mississippi and traveled through Alabama and into the Florida panhandle. Earlier in the day, the storm was responsible for spawning the only confirmed tornado in the area that left major damage in Century, Fla., just west of Jay. Preliminary indications from Escambia County are that an estimated 40-50 homes and businesses were affected by that storm and only minor injuries were reported. The Red Cross is on scene for assistance at the Century Community Center on Industrial Boulevard.
The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has put out the call for artists to design the official poster for the 32nd Anniversary of the Navarre Fun Fest on Navarre Beach. The winning artist will receive a $300 cash award and a complimentary high-visibility artist booth at the event on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
The Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office has a new crime-fighting and alert system that has been deployed to all three Super Wal-Marts in Santa Rosa County, including the Gulf Breeze and Navarre locations. The kiosks cost about $3,800 each and were purchased with crime-prevention funds doled out by the state.
On Friday, the Florida Department of Education issued grades for schools and districts based on the Florida Standards Assessment test scoring. The Santa Rosa County School District placed fourth overall in the state, and all of Navarre schools were ‘A’ rated.
Tallahassee, Fla. – A House panel on Monday unanimously approved a measure aimed at cracking down on unemployment fraud based on identity theft — a practice lawmakers say is spiraling out of control. In fact, House Economic Development & Tourism Chairman Frank Artiles said he’d been the victim of such a crime himself.
Kevin, Rene and Marie Rudzki, representing Juana’s, presented the Fisher House with a $9,370 check on Feb. 12. “The check represents proceeds raised during our Penguin Plunge event on New Year’s Day,” Marie Rudzki said. “We have partnered with the Fisher House for the last five years. Over those years we have raised more than $30,000 for the Fisher House. We chose to partner with the Fisher House because of the community’s strong ties to the military,”
The $15 million dredge-and-fill restoration of Navarre Beach planned to begin around April 1 could be postponed for months because the equipment and crews are behind schedule on similar projects in Delaware and Sarasota counties.
James Shumbert and Dr. Sheryl Roe were killed Feb. 11 when a small plane they were in crashed into the Gulf of Mexico off of Henderson Beach in Destin. The couple was flying in from Texas to celebrate Valentine’s day on the Emerald Coast.
In a video taken Feb. 10, a mother’s despair can be heard over social media as she tells her missing son, “We are looking for you…we love you and we aren’t going to stop searching for you until you are back here safely.” Senior Airman Keifer Huhman, a 2012 Navarre High School graduate, is missing and authorities need information to help find him.
