As new cases of diabetes are on the decline, a new drug emerges to treat diabetes-related vision loss

A new report from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention shows that new cases of diabetes fell by nearly 20 percent between 2008 and 2014. It is the first prolonged decline in more than 25 years. In and of itself, diabetes is an illness that requires constant management, and despite best efforts, an unfortunate derivative of diabetes can be vision loss.

County Commission set to oppose Syrian refugees in Santa Rosa County

In the wake of the Nov. 13 terrorist attack on Paris, Gov. Scott along with 26 other Governors sent a letter to the President of the United States requesting that he “immediately review the process by which you conduct background checks on all individuals applying for refugee status and address the gaps acknowledged by your director of the FBI.”  The letter goes on to state, “In the wake of this recent tragedy, and until we can ensure the citizens of our states that an exhaustive review of all security measures has been completed and the necessary changes have been implemented, we respectfully request that you suspend all plans to resettle additional Syrian refugees.

Kelly Gardner’s equation equals Teacher of the Year

In math, every equation will have an answer.  That’s what Kelly Gardner of Holley-Navarre Middle School loves about teaching math; there is always an answer.  Putting that theory to the test, mathematically if a + b = c, and a = Kelly Gardner, and b = teachers and administrators at Holley-Navarre Middle School (HNMS), then a + b = HNMS Teacher of the Year.  At least that’s how Gardner sees it.  She was awarded the distinction of Teacher of the Year for the school, but she is quick to credit the ones around her for the award, “I am so honored to be Teacher of the Year. But we all work together and we are a family here,” Kelly said.

Hour of Code a hit at HNIS

The cafeteria inside Holley Navarre Intermediate School was turned into a computer lab Monday morning. Wearing headphones and smiles, eager students sat in front of computers and put their tech skills to use during the Hour of Code.

Out and About

I was late on a deadline today and my first inclination was to email them, “Due to the overwhelming abundance of news,” I forgot to send payroll – which I almost did. Don’t tell my staff.  There is so much news and not enough journalists to go around. I’ve talked to many people in neighboring counties who tell me that there are zero journalists at their meetings nor are their citizens there that give a darn. That is a sad, sad state of affairs. I see posts online all the time that say, “I didn’t know that,” or “When did that happen?”
