Florida to hold 103-day Gulf Red Snapper recreational season for 2024

On April 30, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the 2024 Gulf Red Snapper recreational season will last 103 days, the longest season since the state was delegated management of Gulf red snapper. This season will include both summer and fall seasons, including major holiday weekends such as Father’s Day, July 4th and the Thanksgiving holiday.

Spring break season

Spring Break is here!

Schools and universities are letting out intermittently throughout the next month and a half, which means more visitors to northwest Florida beaches. Although Navarre Beach doesn’t have the same reputation for Spring Break as a Destin or Panama City Beach, it attracts plenty of tourists, nonetheless.

Out and About

We had a great white shark wash ashore Friday morning which was very well fed, not pregnant. An autopsy later confirmed that she was probably 30 years old. Females are considered mature and have the potential to be pregnant around 33 years of age. Kudos to the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC); Alex Fox, a Marine Biologist from the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center; Paige Douglas from Gulf World Marine Institute (GWMI); Volunteers Bob and Tony from NBSTCC; and Navarre Beach Fire Department and Sheriff’s Officers who secured the area because there were plenty there who just wanted to use the situation for their five minutes of fame.

Navarre area Santas (and Mrs. Claus) share Christmas cheer

Photo by Katt Mac Photography. Are you on the nice list this year?

Every year, millions of Americans go to malls, outlets, events and parties at Christmastime to see Santa Claus. With a twinkle in their eye and a smile on their face, these special elves capture the spirit of Christmas.

Out and About

Fall is officially here, although the 87-degree temperatures don’t convince me. The mornings are a little cooler, but when you are still in the upper 80s during the day, we will just keep waiting for the temperatures to catch up with the months they are supposed to be in.

Out and About

I was out and about at Juana’s Good Time Regatta this weekend. Kaitie Kiger covered the event on Saturday in a chase boat and I went out on a chase boat Sunday to take pictures.

This was the team at Juana’s/Sailors Grill’s 33rd year organizing and running this event, which is a tremendous asset for our community.

2023 marks 20th anniversary of Beaches to Woodlands tour

The Beaches to Woodlands tour is back for its 20th year.

The annual tourism initiative, which runs from September through November, features various activities across Santa Rosa County including concerts, outdoor markets, beer and wine festivals, pumpkin patches, the Navarre fishing rodeo and the Juana Good Time Regatta, just to name a few. This year, the tour kicks off with Bands on the Blackwater Sept. 1 in Milton.

Improvements coming to Navarre Park dock, seawall

From revamping and rebuilding the children’s park to the removal of the duck pond, Navarre Park has undergone drastic changes in the past few years and according to County Commissioner Colten Wright, there will be more coming.

At the Aug. 3 Tourist Development Council meeting, Wright told the council the dock at Navarre Park may soon be getting a long awaited upgrade.

Navarre local helping save turtles beyond Navarre

Navarre Beach Fishing Pier is the number one pier in Florida for successful sea turtle stranding efforts.

According to the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC), they have saved 45 from the pier in 2023 alone. In 2022, they saved 50 sea turtles at the pier.
