New board members elected

At Holley Navarre Water System’s annual membership meeting on Jan. 16, two board members were voted in. Incumbent director Mark Miller and newcomer Rob Low were selected out a field of four. In addition to the election of board members, the water system’s membership also voted against a change to the utility’s articles of incorporation. The change would have provided a lower threshold for altering the utility’s bylaws to “at least 5% of the members of the corporation” participating in a vote. As it stands now, a change to the bylaws requires approval by the “majority of membership.” The total membership of HNWS is 14,000.

Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Stranding Team has saved 56 turtles (so far) this year

Navarre Beach Fishing Pier is one of the leading areas for sea turtle strandings in the state of Florida. Despite Navarre Beach’s relatively small size (it’s only about 4 miles long), the pier and surrounding area can see anywhere from 45 to 67 turtles a year being rescued from fishing line, hooks and other entrapments. This year, that number is 56, and that’s only through September.

The Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC) has been undergoing an expansion project for the past year and six months, which will include the addition of several new exhibits. Additionally, the expansion will allow NBSTCC to house some of its animal ambassadors and store some of the turtle rescue team’s gear. The expansion is 1,152 square feet and is situated on the north side of the center.

June is Ocean and Rivers Month

From the air we breathe to the water we drink to the food we eat, our oceans and rivers play a critical role in our health and survival. Recognizing that water is one of our most precious resources, the Florida Governmental Utility Authority (FGUA) asks all Floridians to consider and appreciate the “bigger picture” of this life-giving liquid during National Oceans Month and National Rivers Month, which take place each June.

A rare and endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was rescued off the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier at around 5:20 p.m. Friday evening. The turtle was severely wrapped in fishing line, towing a 6-foot fishing pole. The Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation stranding team went into action to retrieve the turtle.
