NOAA: Juvenile admits to killing dolphin

A juvenile has admitted to shooting a bottlenose dolphin with a hunting arrow in Florida state waters, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement.
The dolphin was found dead more than a week after being shot in Orange Beach, Ala.

Reward offered in pregnant dolphin shooting

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the illegal and cruel acts that led to the death of a protected bottlenose dolphin.

Lionfish spotted at Navarre Beach reef

A predatory lionfish was recently spotted in the Gulf of Mexico at the Navarre Beach reef. Now the county plans to permit spearfishing at Navarre Beach Marine Park in an effort to eradicate the invasive species – which packs additional punch with its venomous spines.

Guided kayak tours coming to Navarre Beach

Two grants, totaling nearly $45,000, are helping to grow educational programs, as well as expand the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center. The grants from Santa Rosa County and International Paper are supporting projects for the NBSTCC and the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary.

Lucky shark

A nurse shark that had apparently won a battle with a fisherman became snagged July 8 at the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary Gulf-side reef. Thanks to the quick response of two divers and a local swimmer, the shark was freed and able to go on its way.
