The State of Florida’s “Back to School” tax-free holiday begins at 12:01 a.m., Aug. 1 and continues through 11:59 p.m., Aug. 3. The state estimates Florida residents will save at least $40 million over the three-day, tax-free holiday.
The Air Force has announced a personnel reduction plan that amounts to 3,500 jobs being cut over the next five years. The good news locally is that only 22 positions are expected to be lost at Hurlburt Field. Under the plan, only one facility, Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, is projected to lose fewer positions than Hurlburt.
Navarre and the surrounding area make for a beautiful place to run and exercise outdoors. Dozens of races mark the calendar throughout the year, including the McGuire’s 5K that had more than 9,000 runners this year. Local races like the Sunset Stampede and Flag Day 5k at St. Sylvester mark the end of the spring racing season as temperatures and humidity begin to climb.
What do you get when you merge water and technology? A five-day STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) camp called Sea3PO hosted at the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station. Campers learned to take water samples, conducted research with microscopes and built and drove remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).
Gulf Pointe Academy (GPA), Navarre’s only private school, is relocating to meet growing demand after Santa Rosa County twice halted its expansion plans. The school and its 75 students will be moving to leased space at St. Sylvester Catholic Church when classes resume Sept. 1.
We reported in this week’s issue that Gulf Pointe Academy, a highly successful private school located along Highway 98 in Navarre, was relocating to St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze. Our characterization of St. Sylvester being located in Gulf Breeze apparently raised a few eyebrows and then prompted comments on our social media sites. We agree. St. Sylvester is not in Gulf Breeze Proper. We know that. We noted in our online response that its street address was Gulf Breeze, so we went with it.
Caitlyn Gaddy is entering her freshman year at Navarre High School and completed a summer internship at Pensacola Cooks, a local culinary company that specializes in “putting the fun in food” through education and cooking. As part of her internship, Gaddy assisted with summer camps that the company sponsored and helped with administrative tasks.
Two Navarre High School students and the worship minister from Navarre United Methodist Church are participating in Pensacola State College’s production of “Big: the musical,” which is being presented July 25 – 27 and Aug. 1 – 3 at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium.
Tourists in many cases drive hundreds of miles to enjoy the beauty of Navarre Beach and its emerald green waters. But what is there for them to do when they arrive and find warning flags flying suggesting they stay out of the water?
