Sea turtles have been busy making nests along the Emerald Coast, and according to a Gulf Islands National Seashore (GINS) biologist, 143 baby sea turtles found their way to the Gulf from Pensacola Beach Thursday night. The first baby turtles had hatched July 29 from a nest at Perdido Key.

Early voting started Aug. 11 in Santa Rosa County. Supervisor of Elections Tappie Villane decided to go “above and beyond” what the state required and provide 13 consecutive days for Santa Rosa County residents to vote. The state only required eight days.

Schools soften stance on cellphones

Santa Rosa County School students can openly use cellphones this year, although there will still be restrictions. Students cannot use devices during instructional time, unless a teacher specifies otherwise. The new policy also allows use on district buses.

Holley Navarre Water launches engineering firm

Fabre Engineering has provided services to Holley Navarre Water System (HNWS) for more than 25 years, but two of the company’s long-time engineers made the move Monday to a new location at HNWS. Dale Long and Phil Phillips are now employed by Municipal Engineering Services, Inc. , which is part of HNWS. Water system general manager Ken Walker serves as the new company’s president.

Santa Rosa legal staff costs top $275,000

Local attorney Roy V. Andrews officially became counselor for Santa Rosa County commissioners Aug. 4, following the resignation of former County Attorney Angie Jones, who had a $136,000 annual contract. Andrews’ negotiated $145,000 per year, plus a $400 monthly travel stipend.

Gulf Breeze stormwater rates may increase

The last time stormwater rates went up in the City of Gulf Breeze was 2012 when the monthly cost increased from $4.25 to $4.50. The city council Aug. 7 reviewed the stormwater fund’s projected budget for next year, which showed it would need an infusion of general fund revenue to be balanced.
