Save a life, foster a pet

Animal shelters, humane societies and rescues across the country are looking for foster homes for their animals, and the Navarre and Pensacola areas are no exception.  Shelters are overcrowded, leaving some to be euthanized in order to manage the numbers they have.  Social media sites are inundated daily with lost or found pets and some of them end up being turned over to animal control because the owner cannot be located.  That’s where foster homes come in.

It’s been two years in the making, and on Wednesday President Obama and Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez announced the finalization of the Department of Labor’s rule updating overtime regulations.  The new rule will potentially affect 4.2 million white-collar workers.

PrepareAthon Open House, SAFER Expo this week

Santa Rosa County is participating in PrepareAthon!, a week-long preparedness initiative with FEMA to help communities become more resilient through hazard-specific drills, group discussions, exercises and more. As part of this initiative, Santa Rosa County Emergency Management has been conducting a series of preparedness actions in coordination with National Hurricane Preparedness Week, including two public events.

Private school’s rezoning request gets preliminary approval

Last week, the Santa Rosa County Zoning Board unanimously approved rezoning land to make way for a 20-acre campus for Gulf Point Academy. The rezoning of the 7600 Block of East Bay Boulevard from R1 (Single Family Residential) to PBD (Planned Business District) advances Gulf Point Academy, a private Christian school, toward final plans to relocate and expand operations in Navarre.

Free Summer Concert Series kicks off this week

The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Navarre Press are again co-hosting the popular Thursdays in the Park Free Summer Concert Series.  The series will showcase a variety of local musicians on stage with the Navarre Sound and sunset as a backdrop. Spectators are encouraged to bring their beach blankets and lawn chairs for a night of free family entertainment.  Each week, concertgoers are encouraged to come hungry and purchase concessions provided by some of our Navarre Chamber member restaurants.
