Opinion, Out and About

Out and About

| Sandi Kemp
Our feature on the Business Billboard is Southern Specialty located in the plaza across from Publix. If you haven’t been – what are you waiting for? They are constantly updating their inventory because they have a lot of unique items that are hard to find – and items you didn’t know existed. And, their clothing selection is always fun and perfect for our weather and lifestyle. They even have children’s clothing. Their wall art is Navarre-centric and has the cutest sayings about Navarre and the beach. I know I’m not doing them justice – you just need to stop by. And, if you drink adult beverages, you can also stop by the Vine which is located in the same shopping plaza. Their menu is on our “On the Menu” page.

On our Outdoors page, we have information on the ferry system in Pensacola. Pensacola Bay Cruises is the new management company and they have their act together. You can ride the ferry to Fort Pickens and you don’t have to pay admission to Fort Pickens if you ride the Ferry at the regular price. The vessels (I guess they don’t want to call them ferries) are named Pelican Perch and Turtle Runner and they are homeported in Pensacola, at 750 Commendencia Street, Pensacola, FL 32502. The vessels operate between the City of Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, and Fort Pickens. And yes – there are accommodations for those of you who want to hop on and hop off. I want to try it out before Memorial Day because after that, I’d rather have our tourists enjoy the ride and…the real reason is I stay away from the peak times for tourism. My childhood home was in Orlando and we always knew when to go to Disney and when to not go unless you were into exercises in frustration. I avoid self-inflected frustration.

You might see a familiar by-line in our sports section. John Richardson has come out of retirement to cover a softball game here or there – and awards banquets. He just can’t stay away – and we don’t want him to. And, neither do the parents or the athletes. He is a superstar!

And, we appreciate the expanded coverage our athletes have received with the additional of Stuart Camp to our sports coverage team. And, everyone knows Brian Lester – because he is awesome like that.  As you might imagine, at any given game we may take 200 or more photos. The 198 that don’t make the paper, can be found at navarrephotos.com.  This goes for every community and sporting event we cover. You can buy photos for as little as $3 or put a photo on a mug or a mousepad…and more.

Have you been wondering when Tunes by the Dunes is starting back up? The first concert of the summer will be May 30. The summer series is co-hosted by Okaloosa Gas, Navarre Press, Santa Rosa Tourism Development Office, and the Navarre Chamber Foundation. You will see more about the series each week in Navarre Press.

The 2019 graduating class of Navarre High School graduates at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25 at the Pensacola Bay Center. We will be there just like we have been since the very first graduating class in 2000. The May 23 issue of Navarre Press will have a lot of information about the class including the valedictorian and the salutatorian, scholarship winners and a listing of everyone that is graduating along with a lot of other awesome information that you will not want to miss.
