Out and About

We also have a listing of Easter services in our area beginning with a 6 a.m. Easter Sunrise service on Navarre Beach. There will be a special guest, Larry Ogunjobi, the starting Defensive Tackle from Cleveland Browns at the Easter services at Momentum Church in Gulf Breeze and telecast to the Navarre location at Navarre High. I didn’t type teleport…which is what we really need around here with the traffic issues, etc. And, my car doesn’t move as fast as on 98 as it use to. But that is another topic for another day unless I need more copy for my column.
I don’t know if you noticed but we have a new batch of State Champions in our midst. Our Navarre High School Boy’s Weightlifting team brought it home at state, much to the dismay of the runners-up. The runner up, Spruce Creek, has won the state championship in boys weightlifting 27-times. The Raiders also came home with two individual state champions, Josh Carter and Jordan Jefferson. I don’t want to tell the whole story because our sports writer, Brian Lester was there to witness this momentous occasion. Well, that, and he does a much better job writing about sports than I do. And, we have a commemorative poster somewhere in the paper – that is world class. Which, by the way, is what our community deserves.
Thankfully, the pier will not be torn up during the summer months but only because of a fluke. They are sending the bids back and asking for a re-bid which is delaying the project, hopefully until mid-late October when there isn’t as much foot and fish traffic on the pier. Anglers get awfully feisty if you mess with their opportunities to go fishing. Not to mention, it wouldn’t be fair to the management team at the pier because it would reduce traffic during our busiest months. I’m sure our tourism and economic development folks would have stepped in to be the voice of reason if it had gone through as planned.
That being said, the “patches” on the pier have much to be desired. I think we should have the art students go out there and paint them as colorful Band-Aids. It looks like someone when out there and said, “I’ll fix this – hold my beverage.” (Sorry – that is what it looks like…no offense the person that actually made these repairs. I’m sure a lot of thought went into each and every repair….)
A big thank you to the Navarre resident who took it upon herself to contact FDOT and Gulf Power regarding the power line repairs that will impede the east bound traffic each morning for six to eight weeks. She implored them to please start after 9 because it was taking our residents 1.5 hours to drive 20 miles to Hurlburt Field. I promised her I wouldn’t use her name – but she deserves a medal for stepping up and acting instead of just complaining.
