Out and About

Friday night, Navarre’s very own Lisa Milan, Mrs. Florida 2019, crowned the winner of the Miss Navarre High School pageant, Faith Nicholson. We are so lucky to have Lisa and her husband Corey as part of our community. Corey is active-duty military and they live in Holley by the Sea. You can read about the pageant on our Education page.
If you think that we have a lot of education news this week, you are correct. Usually, we are able to fit it all on one page, but not this week. In addition to the pageant, we have a story by our new reporter and former Navarre High School golf team member, Drew Drohan, about the Step up for Students scholarship program. This program administers four scholarships: the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, the Gardiner Scholarship, the Hope Scholarship and the Reading Scholarship Accounts – and it gives Florida parents the ability to select the best schooling options for their children. Please read and share this article.
Our student intern, Eden Davenport, also gives us a view this week into the Navarre High School Mock Trial team as they competed at the semifinals in Pensacola. Mock Trial is a club for students to prepare to go to court with a fictional case and represent on the side of either the prosecution or defense. I won’t give away how they placed in the competition – you can read her story to find out.
As I type this column, I’m in Tallahassee for Public Notice Day. We are very fortunate to have public notices in newspapers like ours that have proven and paid circulation. The notices are also posted on www.FloridaPublicNotices.com by newspapers across the state. In fact, it is a requirement per our membership with the Florida Press Association. If some people had it their way, the only requirement for a public notice would be online – somewhere – and it would depend on you finding it by chance. Also, there is a paper trail with newspapers. Unless you have worked at a newspaper, you wouldn’t know that a public notice isn’t as simple as sending a newspaper the text for the public notice. We also have to provide legal affidavits, written proof of publication and a secure and verifiable paper trail. State and local governments, attorneys and private citizens rely on this documentation to ensure that notices are published in a timely and lawful manner, as newspapers are required by law to do.
I hope to meet up with a few of our lawmakers while I’m here during session. You will know if I’m successful by the number of pictures I have in next week’s issue.
Quote of the Week: Face reality as it is, not as it was, or as you wish it were. Be candid with everyone. Don’t manage, lead. Change before you have to. If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete. Control your own destiny, or someone else will. Jack Welch (1935 – ) An American business executive, author, and chemical engineer.
