Opinion, Out and About

Out and About

| Sandi Kemp
We have our Mind, Body and Spirit edition this week and the theme is heart health.  We usually have this section once a year, but we are going to have them more often – including one at the end of July with a guide to the Navarre Beach Area Chamber Back-to-School Health and Business Expo. The expo chair is Dr. Sarah Skelly with the Santa Rosa Medical Center. If you are interested in getting involved in this expo call the chamber at 939-3267 and if you want to be in our next health themed Mind, Body Spirit – call us.

And since I mentioned the chamber and this is Valentine’s Day – be sure to stop by the chamber today from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the chamber office located at 2053 Fountain Professional Court, Suite A. for “Love your Chamber Day.”  The purpose of this event is for community minded folks and businesses of the Navarre area to meet the Chamber team and learn about opportunities to become involved in events and local issues. There will be games, prizes, food and networking involved.

It is officially tax season and since everyone should have received all their tax documents they need to file their taxes. If you need help, call our advertiser – H&R Block who advertises on our business billboard page. I made one new year’s resolution this year and it was to file my taxes in a timely manner. I just filed 2017 in October – which seems like yesterday – because it nearly was.

On the cover last week, we had a picture of the Navarre High School Cheer team that won the state championship. This week, we have a story that tells more about their exciting accomplishment.

The one mile out artificial reef deployment located directly in front of the pier is complete and kayakers are already reporting very good success fishing on the reef site. The design and installation of the reef was funded by a $1.4 million National Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) grant, which is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as part of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill payout. As a stipulation of the grant, these funds can be used only for design and deployment of area reefs. The Navarre Chamber Foundation paid for the permitting and local resident and kayak fishing enthusiast Bob Boston helped see the project through with the Navarre Chamber Foundation’s assistance. The reefs will bring a lot of kayakers to our area to fish the reefs. They will be a magnet for scuba divers as well.

This week on the Outdoors page, our reporter Brian Lester is debuting a series called ‘On the road in the great outdoors’ where he profiles different places worth checking out. It won’t be every week but as he visits different spots he will bring back a story. This week is Blue Spring and the wonder of the manatees.

There are plenty of Mardi Gras activities coming up on the calendar. The Navarre Krewe of Jesters Mardi Gras ball will be Saturday night at the Navarre Conference Center. See our Local Happenings page for more information. On that page you will also find information about the Milton Mardi Gras parade as well as the Navarre Mardi Gras parade on Feb. 23.

I hope everyone has an awesome Valentine’s Day, one of my favorite days because…all you need is love.

Quotes of the Week:

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, (1 Corinthians 13:4, NASB)

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13, NASB)
