Opinion, Out and About

Out and About

| Sandi Kemp
Last week two of our team members went to the naturalization ceremony in Pensacola. After the ceremony, 275 new citizens and their families walked out of the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum as America’s newest citizens. They get an awesome send-off by the judges, guests and those in attendance who wish them well and tell them congratulations as they walk out the door. It is awesome to witness those that have worked hard along the way toward the path of becoming a citizen and their excitement and sometimes tears when it finally happens. We have a story of one of our country’s newest citizens, Anna Leavenworth of Navarre, who is originally from Russia. You will find her story on page 3B.

Get ready for the big sale at Southern Specialty. They have the cutest gift items and clothing, and they recently started carrying baby clothes and gift items. They also started carrying Katie Loxton of London’s jewelry and hand bags. If what you want is sold out, they will do their best to get it for you. While you are there, make time to go next door to The Vine and have a glass of your favorite beverage. Where is Southern Specialty? It is in the shopping center on the south side of Highway 98 across from Publix and their ad is on our business billboard page and on our website.

Believe it or not, it is tax time. It is hard for me to believe because I didn’t finish my taxes last year until the last minute – in October. Seems like yesterday…because it almost was. One of my resolutions this year was to get my taxes done earlier. I didn’t set the bar high because September would be earlier. However, my real goal is March. If you need help – look at our business billboard page for information for H&R Block. They even have a military discount.

This is your last week to buy forever stamps before the price goes up an entire nickel each.  I think I almost wiped out the Navarre USPS of their Scooby Doo Forever Stamps and the Dragon Stamps that have foil in the design. They may have restocked by now, but I plan on going by there and picking up a lot more before close of business Friday.

Johnny Huston’s and the Waffle House are currently working on remodeling and are closed for the next two weeks or more. I would like to shut down to remodel our office and have new flooring and furniture for the team. However, we would still need to produce a paper each week.

The water board election turned out as I had hoped. They have a long road ahead of them. They met this week to choose officers and they went by an agenda that was produced by the former board president, now board member, Will Goulet. Therefore, the agenda today was Will’s agenda. I look forward to seeing what the new board will be able to accomplish together. There are a lot of big issues that need to be looked at for our water system. I appreciate Linda Young, a Navarre citizen with a lot of water and environmental experience standing up and saying that she would like to see a committee be stood up that addresses our effluent and sewage treatment issues. There are a lot of things that Navarre and Santa Rosa don’t have, and one is a proper storm water management plan and the other is no one looking at our wetlands, rivers and waterways in their entirety – the big picture.  It is harder if not impossible to fix something after it has already happened. It is better to have the insight and foresight to head us in the right direction to start with. We see evidence of this in this issue. Where do you put the roads after you have had zero planning? Where do you put neighborhoods…right next to a community that is already having wetlands, stormwater and runoff issues. I think we elected officials and community members who are now at least questioning decisions, even though we are already way down the road making the cure – very inconvenient and expensive.
