Opinion, Out and About

Out and About

| Sandi Kemp
Start the weekend on Friday night at the Taste of Gulf Breeze for ages 21 and up. You can taste food and beverages from area restaurants for a very low cost. Please see the ad in this issue on page B9.

There are two – yes two – Oktoberfests in Navarre this Saturday. Word of caution – Uber from one to the other.

Juana’s Pagoda’s Oktoberfest starts at noon and at 4 p.m. the distributors will be packing up.   The cost is $25 for beer tasting and includes a souvenir glass while they last.

Ye Olde Brothers Brewery is also having Oktoberfest on Saturday.  Their Oktoberfest begins about the same time but doesn’t end until 10 p.m. and there will be authentic German music – played by a disc jockey. The $25 entry includes food and a beer mug. See their ad for more details.

Ye Olde Brother’s Brewery also has pink beer in honor of October – breast cancer awareness month. I’m sure you noticed the pink wrap we have on this issue. They are donating $1 from every pink beer to the Pink Pirates group who are raising money to provide mammograms to women who may not otherwise be able to afford one.

A big thank you to all of our advertisers on our Pink Wrap: White Wilson Medical Center, Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Santa Rosa Medical Center, Pink Pirates and Ye Olde Brother’s Brewery.

During Juana’s Oktoberfest – you will see anglers from the Navarre Fishing Rodeo weighing in their fish from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. If you are an angler – you can still register at NavarreFishingRodeo.com.  And, two Jr. Anglers can weigh fish under a single registered angler’s ticket. You will find details at the website mentioned above.

We have been advertising Take A Kid fishing for about two months and all registrations were filled as of Monday. Make sure you look for the announcement and the opening of registration if you missed it this year.

In conjunction with the Okaloosa Gas District Navarre Fishing Rodeo and Holley by the Sea Fishing Club Take a Kid Fishing – the Santa Rosa County Commissioners have made the pier admission free this weekend AND they are selling their annual walking and fishing passes at a 10 percent discount – this weekend only. For more details see www.fishnavarreweekend.com .

The best part – I think – is that conceivably, a child can learn to fish this weekend, earn a free rod and reel at Take a Kid Fishing and then fish all weekend under a paid adult angler in the Navarre Fishing Rodeo and win prizes for their catch. That will hook them for life on an awesome sport that is easy to do and prevalent in Navarre.

I’m a little jealous of the children that live around here. After school in Orlando, I would grab my fishing pole and go fishing in Lake Conway and catch bream. If I grew up in Navarre, I could ride the bus to the pier, fish all afternoon and bring home redfish and see dolphins and turtles while fishing. We live in an awesome place. You just need to look around and realize the opportunities and beauty that God had given you.

Next weekend, the National World War II Museum in New Orleans is having their Air, Sea & Land Festival. General Admission is $25. We have 100 general admission tickets in our office that we have arranged to give to our subscribers first – and new subscribers – second. See their ad on A7. I will be in New Orleans for this awesome show of WWII tour de force – on assignment. This will be an awesome weekend. I hope to you see you – Out and About.

Quote of the Week: “While some criticize, pick, scheme and whine; I will work. I will beat you every time. I am not smarter than you, and I didn’t start with more than you. I will beat you because I will outwork you.” Truth! Winning and work go hand in hand.  Tamara Fountain, CEO Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
