Opinion, Out and About

Out and About

If you like Beer and Germany – you are going to like Oct. 6 in Navarre. The festivities start at Juana’s/Sailors Grill on Navarre Beach with their sixth annual Oktoberfest. There will be beer tastings from beer distributors at different stations with music on the deck from noon until 4 p.m. Admission and a commemorative souvenir glass (while supplies last) is $25.  From 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. you can also witness anglers from the Navarre Fishing Rodeo bringing in their catch to be weighed.  All of this is a lot of fun. Then – you may want to call an Uber and make your way up Highway 87 to Ye Olde Brothers Brewery.

Ye Olde Brothers Brewery on Highway 87 is also hosting Oktoberfest Saturday, Oct. 6.  DJ Carl Walker starts at 3 p.m. playing authentic German music and other genres.  The $25 entry includes a beer mug, giant pretzel and two German Brats.  Visit YeOldeBrothersBrewery.com for more information.

A big thank you to Culver’s of Navarre who will be sponsoring our Navarre High School athlete of the week. See the Sports section for this week’s athlete of the week.

St. Sylvester Parish Center will be hosting a Country Hoedown Sept. 29.  All are welcome to the barbecue and dance with the Chris Earle Band performing.  See their ad for more information.

Many of you knew Jay DeGraw, who was affectionately and officially known as “Gunny.” He died in March and at the time his family said they would come back to Navarre for a memorial service for his dear friends here. The date has been set for Sept. 22 at 11 a.m., just one day after his birthday. He would have been 94. The service will include full military honors and will be held at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 7810 Navarre Parkway. After the service friends and family will gather in Henderson Hall.

Pensacola Little Theatre presents “Into the Woods” starting Sept. 21.  Navarre Press has tickets for our All Access subscribers.  If you don’t have All Access, call the office and upgrade your subscription to receive complimentary tickets. Our Navarre Raider Football team had quite the comeback after halftime this past week against Crestview. It was nothing short of amazing. I watched it from home because I was busy with Regatta activities earlier in the evening. I wish the games were televised every week – but unfortunately it currently only happens once a season. The Raiders are playing at 7 p.m. this week at Choctaw. Next week – Sept. 21, they are playing Pine Forest at home and it is the Homecoming game, which is earlier in the year than usual.  If you go to only one game this year – go to the Navarre Raiders versus Gulf Breeze Dolphins Oct. 26 at home. That is also senior night.  The last game of the regular season is the following week, Nov. 2 at Niceville.

I enjoyed covering the Regatta this past weekend with our senior sports reporter, John Richardson. The weather was beautiful and the chase boats we were on were great, especially the one I was on. The Rudzki family puts on some awesome community events that bring in people from all over the country. There were sailors there from as far away as California, and a big group from Memphis, Tennessee, and other places near and far. I heard our accommodations managers saying that it was a great weekend for them, especially with the follow on of the Hobie Nationals all this week.

As Florence barrels toward the eastern coast of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia it gives us pause to think that but for the grace of God that could be us. And, we aren’t out of the woods yet. We are just entering the peak of hurricane season and we have until Nov. 30 before the season officially closes. While we know where Florence is headed, Isaac and Helene are right behind her and a disturbance in the Gulf is heading towards Texas. We have heard from several of our readers about how the storm is already affecting them. One had a child return home after only a few weeks of college because the college told the students to evacuate.  Remember Shana Roberson, our former health writer? She is only former because her Air Force husband got orders to move to Virginia – and now they are evacuating with their three children. So, if you have any prayers to spare, say some for our friends and readers in that area.
