Hurricane season started June 1. Are you prepared? This week is our first of six-monthly Hurricane Update pages with great information…if we do say so ourselves.
I had an interesting conversation with someone this week. They were in the “un-lock” business – not to be confused with the “locksmith” business – about 10 years ago. This person decided they would like to start their business again. I asked him how he was going to market himself. He told me that whatever he had to do to get on the top of the list of 411. 411? Does that even exist? When I got done laughing – I told him that no one calls 411 and I wasn’t sure it still existed. I imagined if it did there is one guy in a basement Googling or Binging phone numbers for people – like him – that still call 411. I asked him when the last time was that he called 411. He said it had been years. I told him to get off the phone and call 411. He did – it still exists and is carrier specific. I called from my Verizon Phone and it was Verizon information. However, I don’t think that is a good marketing plan. I told him I thought they probably charged $1 for a 411 call and he wanted to know why they would charge. I said it was a surcharge for not using your smartphone. It was one of the funniest conversations I have had in a long, long time. And, it brought me back to when we called a phone number to get the weather. How did we exist without cell phones – especially as parents.
My mom read about my wine drinking in my column. She said she raised her four children to be teetotalers. When she read my column – she decided that three out of four isn’t bad. I would have to agree. I am still considered a teetotaler around my friends because – I don’t drink much. I decided that zero alcohol wasn’t going to be my claim to fame. And, if you must totally abstain to be in control – are you really in control? Unless – you are an alcoholic. Then – it is being in control to not drink alcoholic beverages.
