If anyone has experienced the miracle of child birth, you will forever remember the first time you heard your baby’s heartbeat. The fast flutter sound fills the room along with the smiles and giggles from the parents.
The heartbeat signifies life – a living, breathing life. The heartbeat of an unborn baby is no exception. The heartbeat begins at around three weeks and can be heard as early as six weeks. The baby is still forming and growing, and it is very much alive. Yet, the current statute in the state of Florida says that this baby can be aborted unless the mother is seven months or more pregnant.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, at the end of three months, the unborn baby can open and close its fists and mouth, external ears are formed, and the baby is fully formed. At the end of four months, the baby can suck his or her thumb, yawn, stretch and even make faces. At five months, the baby will start moving as they are developing muscles and exercising them. At the end of six months, the unborn baby’s eyes can open. The baby can even respond to sounds – it could be surprised or scared by a loud sound. And unborn babies can feel pain as well.
The “heartbeat bill” says when a heartbeat is detected, the baby can no longer be aborted. Why? Because the heartbeat is a sign of life. A great big, huge sign of life. A bundle of life. There is no comprehension of the reasons why little heartbeats are aborted. They are a blessing and a gift from God. And while we wish any abortion was illegal (save extreme cases), we are pleased that Florida is set to vote on this bill and we hope for God’s hand to protect the heartbeat.
