The right of way typically extends 10 feet or more out from the edge of the pavement. County code prohibits placing dangerous obstructions in the right of way. I’ve seen 4×4 posts along Edgewood and 6-inch concrete columns along East Bay Boulevard placed in the right of way. This is dangerous!
Edgewood is also festooned with big brick pile mailboxes placed right on the edge of the roadway. County code requires all mailboxes to be at least 2 ½ feet back from the pavement edge. On roads with speed limits over 30 mph, the setback is 6 feet and mailboxes can only be mounted on 4-inch wood or 2-inch metal posts that break away or bend under impact. Not rigid piles of brick!
You’re not helping your mail carrier by making them stop in the middle of the traffic lane. One also wonders if anyone checked for buried wires or pipes before planting these posts.
