Charlie Cottrell and Jaxson Spalla jogged with an orange Gatorade bucket in hand, doing their best to catch up to head coach Jay Walls, who was making his way through the handshake line.
But as they attempted to dump ice water on their elated coach, who had just notched a milestone win in his career at the helm of the Navarre Raiders, Walls thwarted the effort.
It’s district tournament time for area volleyball teams.
Things get started Monday with a pair of games as Milton (8-16) travels to Tate (17-7) in the District 1-6A tourney while Central plays host to Laurel Hill in District 1-1A play.
Navarre and Pace finished first and second, respectively, in the overall standings at the Santa Rosa County Swim Meet Thursday at the Pullum YMCA. Milton took fourth.
The meet took place on a chilly and sometimes rainy afternoon, with swimmers huddling up in an effort to stay warm, wearing blankets and jackets, but there was also plenty of energy as they cheered on their teammates in a tightly contested meet.
District 1-4S play resumes this week for Navarre’s football team, which hits the road to take on Milton.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Hurley Manning Field.

She’s one of the top hitters in the area, racking up nearly 300 kills on the season as she has built on her success last season at the varsity level.
Adalynn Curtis has consistently been one of the top cross-country runners for Navarre all season.
At the EscaRosa meet last week, the freshman standout continued with that consistency, placing 14th overall in a time of 21:56.
The latest regional rankings are out and Pace and Navarre both remain in the top eight in Region 1-4S while Jay is still holding down a spot in the top four in Region 1-1R.
