Raiders prepare for Milton Panthers
The Navarre Raiders offensive and defensive squads scrimmaged Aug. 15 for the second consecutive Friday. However, when the Raiders take the field at 7 p.m., Aug. 21 for the Kick-Off Classic, they will see Milton Panther players across the line of scrimmage from them.

Tiger Point pro shop relocating, dining room expanding
In the years before Hurricane Ivan, the Tiger Point Golf Club pro shop was located in a stand-alone building near the edge of the parking lot. After Ivan, the club’s previous owner decided to move the pro shop into the clubhouse. The Gulf Breeze City Council Monday started the process to move it back.

Untested defense key to success
To say the Raider defense is in a rebuilding year is an understatement. Junior cornerback Michael Sandle is the only full-time starter returning for the Raiders from last season. “Some of the players from our current unit played other positions last year. In some other cases they started a couple of games on defense.” This lack of experience does not stop Sandle or the rest of the defensive unit from being confident.

The Navarre High School Lady Raiders officially formed their Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshmen Volleyball teams last week after crowded tryouts took place at the school Aug. 4 and 5.

Navarre women compete in bodybuilding competition
Navarre residents Shay Griffin and Nicole Lancaster traveled to Mobile, Ala. for the Heart of Dixie fitness competition Aug. 9. The women, who are friends and mothers, were both successful at the competition where Griffin took first place in open figure A, and Lancaster took third place in open bikini class d.

NHS seeks new baseball coach
The Navarre Raiders baseball team will have a new coach for the 2015 season after Coach Bubba Meredith resigned unexpectedly Aug. 5. Meredith has accepted a teaching position at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola. Meredith moved to Navarre from Arizona and was the Raiders’ head coach for two seasons.

YMCA Wahoos close out swim season
The Navarre YMCA Wahoos competed Aug. 2 at the 2014 BASS Championship Meet held at Hunter Pool in Pensacola. Navarre swimmers claimed four, first place finishes.

Raider Day becomes Midnight Madness
If the turf at Bennett C. Russell Stadium in Navarre could talk, it would have be screaming, “Uncle” during the early morning hours of Aug. 9. Football players, from the tiniest Navarre Youth Sports Association (NYSA) athletes to high school seniors, ran, jumped and even mashed each other into the turf for more than seven hours as Raider Day became Midnight Madness. The event began with a 6 p.m. game between 5 and 6-year-olds and concluded at midnight with a scrimmage featuring the varsity, JV and freshmen teams.

Diamond Aces puts travel softball in play for young girls
Many parents and young athletes struggle to fill the sports training gap left in Santa Rosa County from a lack of middle school athletic programs. One local club is striving to do just that with their Gulf Coast Diamond Aces traveling softball team.
