Lady Raiders’ soccer seniors looking forward to another great season
The 2013 Navarre High School girls’ soccer season was special. The team advanced to the regional semifinals before losing by a single goal. Despite the disappointing loss, the team made history. The Raiders won matches over Gulf Breeze and Niceville for the first time ever. One of the main reasons for their success last year was the 11 seniors on the team. Coach Rob Simon had so many seniors on the team, he was able to substitute one senior for another.

Raiders get ready for ‘Midnight Madness’
Navarre High School football players start practice Monday, Aug. 4, but they can’t get back into full gear until the sixth day of practice. So, the coaching staff, Navarre Raider Quarterback Club and Navarre Youth Sports Association (NYSA) are launching the first-ever “Midnight Madness.”

Practice makes perfect at Wahoo’s swim meet
With a full slate of swim meets scheduled for July, Coach Mary Moorer scheduled a mock swim meet June 21 at the Betty J. Pullum Family YMCA in Navarre. “We have a lot of swimmers on the team this year that are new to competitive swimming,” Moorer said. “We wanted to get them used to meet conditions before the July meets are held.”

Ducks, guns and golf
A ceremonial shotgun start kicked off the 2014 Ducks Unlimited charity golf tournament June 21. Seventy-two golfers lined up for a chance to win Stoeger shotguns among other prizes.

Boo lends a hand at charity event
More than 20 four-person teams took to the course June 20 at the Club at Hidden Creek to compete, have fun and support a Santa Rosa County-based nonprofit that provides support for disabled young adults. An added attraction was an opportunity to spend a few minutes with PGA Tour pro Boo Weekley, who was stationed at the 17th hole to help raise additional funds for Vision of Hope.

NFL players, coaches in Navarre
About 130 high school and middle school football players and their parents spent last weekend in Navarre, so the youth athletes could hone their skills learning from Super Bowl and All-Pro NFL players and coaches. Keith Brahms organized the local camp for Football University, a company that holds the player training events across the country.

NHS cheer team mentors younger cheerleaders
The Navarre High School Cheerleading team sponsored a clinic for young cheerleaders June 10-13. Kindergarten through eighth-grade girls attended to learn routines, fight songs, jumps, techniques and even some stunting.

Navarre readies for World Cup (2030)
The same week that the World Cup started in Brazil was a perfect time to have soccer camp for the Navarre Youth Sports Association. “This is our eighth year holding the camp,” said Navarre High School Girls Soccer Coach Rob Simon. “We have over 40 kids that signed up for the one week camp. Many are younger kids that are 4, 5 and 6 years old. It is a chance to get them out, playing and developing an interest in soccer.”

GBHS courts available for public use
The Santa Rosa County School Board and the City of Gulf Breeze have reached an agreement that allows the public to use the Gulf Breeze High School tennis courts, while the city’s courts in Shoreline Park remain closed.

Running the Flag Day 5k
Runners and walkers hit the pavement Saturday, June 14 for the Fourth Annual Flag Day 5k sponsored the Columbiettes of St. Sylvester Catholic Church. Proceeds from the event benefited the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and Life, Inc.
