The beach traffic seems to have calmed down a bit since Memorial Day weekend and the weekend before. I try to go to the beach when all the locals are leaving. As a local, you have an advantage to plan to go when the timing is right because, hopefully, we have many opportunities to go. I apply the same principle when I go to Destin during the summer. James Calkins is not new to making controversial statements, but last week at a Board of County Commission meeting, he crossed a line. He openly refused to apologize and in fact, to the shock of the audience, doubled down on his words.

For almost four hours, the line of people stretched around the walls of the enormous church foyer then curled around a corner and extended back into the church’s sanctuary. Hundreds of people had come that evening to pay their last respects to my wife’s brother, Dave, a testament to a life well lived by a man well-loved.
