For God’s Sake: Pursue knowledge
I had a short career in the animated film industry as an animator of such popular cartoons as Scooby Doo and The Flintstones. Every Saturday morning, I not only watched the cartoons I had animated, but also the credits that ran at the end just to see my name in them.

When the new high school in the south end of Santa Rosa County opens its doors to students for the first time in 2026, it will be three floors, have 74 classrooms, CTE labs, a gym, a sports field house and athletic fields. It will have the capacity for 1,800 students.
What it won’t have are two things that would have benefitted high school athletics in this area in a big-time way. I’m talking about a swimming pool and a track with a rubberized surface.

Good citizenship requires access to truthful information
“Truth is our currency.” That is the first, most basic and foundational core value prescribed by our parent company, Sandpaper Publishing. We explain it this way: “We must know the truth to make good decisions. The same with our community – they must know the truth. Admit mistakes quickly so we can deal with them.”

For God’s Sake: what is a Christian?
Not long ago, my wife and I had breakfast at a restaurant that has become our favorite breakfast destination. I had eggs benedict: two poached eggs, each set atop a piece of Canadian bacon and a halved English muffin, then blanketed with a hollandaise sauce. They were delicious. Eggs benedict is a dish of misnomers: the bacon is not Canadian, the muffin is not British, and France, not Holland, is the country of origin for the sauce. A label is no guarantee of authenticity.

Let the record reflect, Jay High School in north Santa Rosa County does not have a wrestling team. The district’s county commissioner, James Calkins, shared a post over the weekend on social media and congratulated Jay’s wrestling team – Jay, Oklahoma. He later blamed it on a staff member and removed the post. It is just a suggestion, but if you follow the Santa Rosa Press Gazette sports page on Facebook, and X, you wouldn’t make that mistake. Also, we are sure if our Jay High School had a wrestling team, they would be worthy of congratulations. When you are unsure about your sports teams, just ask Brian Lester – our Santa Rosa County sports reporter. He is the expert on Navarre, Milton, Pace and Jay sports.

#Respectmydecision. That’s the hashtag that has become quite popular on social media when an athlete announces he or she is decommitting or transferring to another school.
Typically, you only see it in football. In the end, it’s one of those things that shouldn’t have to accompany a decision.
