Jersey Mike’s opens next week in the shopping plaza on the south side of Highway 98 across from Publix. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and we will let you know the big day. I did a little research and found out there is one in Destin and two in Pensacola. The next closest shop is either in Birmingham or Tallahassee. Jersey Mike’s franchise has more than doubled in size in three years. Last year, 155 new locations opened. Beginning with the first location in 1956, the sub franchise has more than 1,300 locations open and/or under development nationwide.
Hard to believe it has only been two years, but the VINE Wine Bar & Shop across from Publix will celebrate its second anniversary this Saturday – June 13. And, because they are celebrating – they are having specials. You can get 20 percent off by the glass all day (bogo excluded) and they will host a $5 tasting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Music is from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Hurricane season officially started Monday. Make sure to check out our Hurricane Guide so you can be prepared. Our local Ace Hardware carries many of the supplies you should keep on hand. You will also see Vanderheyden storm shutters advertising. We have Vanderheyden’s fabric shield window coverings for the Navarre Press office. Thankfully we haven’t had to use them yet, but if we are threatened by a storm, we know how our windows and doors will be protected. We also have the aluminum roll-down shutters for our upstairs windows so we don’t have to crawl around on a steep metal roof before a potential storm.
Happy Anniversary to us! Fifteen years is a long time. I went back and read our 5-year and 10-year anniversary issues and that was eye-opening. One of the first things I noticed was that there were a lot more letters to the editor. Perhaps with the popularity of social media, people feel that they are getting their opinions heard by writing on Facebook. Perhaps we need to start posting more of our Facebook responses.
Congrats to the Class of 2015! Baccalaureate is tonight at Gulf Breeze Methodist Church at 6 p.m. Navarre High’s graduation is this Saturday at the Pensacola Bay Center at 6 p.m. Gulf Breeze graduates will cross the stage earlier as their commencement is at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Next Thursday, May 21, kicks off the free summer concerts at Navarre Park sponsored by the Navarre Chamber and Navarre Press. The concert starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. Not Quite Fab will perform and Dirt Road Cookers will serve concessions. See the Navarre Beach Chamber’s ad for all the details and schedule. May 21 is also Navarre Press’s last paper of our 15th year – and we will be there celebrating.

The Navarre High School baseball team won districts and is playing tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. at home against Tallahassee Lincoln. It would be great if there was a good-sized hometown crowd for these young men who have worked very hard this season.
This weekend is the extremely fun Navarre Fun Fest. Friday evening kicks off the event with live entertainment, a children’s area, and many vendor booths. Saturday is the 5K run followed by a full day of Fun Fest. Please see the Fun Fest Guide “on” this paper – which you can’t miss because it is wrapping this week’s edition of the Navarre Press.
Navarre Garden Club is presents its annual Spring Fling Tasting Luncheon Friday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be served and visitors can participate in a Butterfly Garden in a Pot workshop.
