Out and About
It seems escape rooms are all the rage right now and Navarre is fortunate to have one. It opened recently and Navarre Press had the opportunity to visit and find out more about this entertainment business model. The trend started in Japan in 2007 and now they are worldwide – including Navarre. You can read more about it on our Business page. It would be a great team-building exercise for businesses. Maybe even for our county commissioners – it would require them to come together to create a solution to the puzzle of clues to be able to get out of the room. Hmmm…work together to solve a problem. What a novel concept.

Out and About
Just when you think you have seen it all, you haven’t. I know a lot of our readers aren’t on Facebook 24/7 like our District 4 County Commissioner. Some of you learned about Rob Williamson’s midnight raid on the sign for the first time in last week’s issue. A lot has happened since then. RW continues to plead his case on the internet and had an email campaign directed to the county commissioners before Monday’s regularly scheduled county commission meeting. The very meeting where RW could have brought up his new found emotional connection to the former sign. An emotional connection that he did not have before he was swayed by a few on Facebook. As you will read in this issue, he was chided by his fellow county commissioners and I applaud them for that. However, I don’t personally believe it went far enough. We cannot trust a chairman that is led by emotions. Emotions are fleeting and not to be relied upon. And, you make bad decisions when you are led by your emotions. Such as, “I don’t know what came over me.” Or “It was in the heat of the moment.”

If the sign fiasco wasn’t so serious it would be funny. I had texts from all over the country from people that use to live here asking if Navarre could just get a life. Maybe, this is the first you have heard of it, if you aren’t on social media. I think my 23-year-old daughter said it best, “Why do people think that Facebook is real?” Why would a county commissioner take a sign down based on the emotions of people on Facebook and then post “Done” like it is an official means of communication?” We all know Facebook is fake. I’ve seen couples live what seem like fairy tale lives on Facebook and then the next thing I know, they are filing for divorce. Facebook is where the truth goes to die. People think they can say things about other people without impunity. Some people look at Facebook all day long and depending what is on Facebook will determine the outcome of their day. Obvious that was the case, unfortunately, for Rob Williamson.

Out and About
This issue is our next to our last issue of our 16th year. Soon, sweet 16 will be in our rear-view mirror and 17 will be upon us. According to songs about being 17, it is a time to be innocent but experienced, courageous but afraid, naïve but jaded and beautiful yet lonely. According to pop culture – it is a time of transition and change. We will see about that. I think we will just skip the confused, lonely, afraid, jaded and naïve characteristics. We do have a surprise coming up for our 17th year and it does have to do with a song, but we will keep that under our proverbial hats for now.

Out and About
I was out and about on Saturday (imagine that) and I happened upon a pet adoption event in front of Cricket Wireless. I recognized a few familiar faces but I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer Allan-Hagedorn for the first time. She was in her element with a mixture of all kinds of puppies and full grown dogs. She was large and in charge (though she isn’t large – that is just an expression.) I knew there was a story there and possibly two. The quick story I wrote about the event and the one I haven’t written – about her. Like everyone, she has a story. I just don’t know about it yet. Her business card has her job title as “Chief Miracle-Maker.” I know that must be true. And, how often have you heard Miracle-Maker? Not often. I’ve heard of a Miracle-Worker which means someone works on making miracles happen. However, Jennifer doesn’t work on it – she makes miracles happen. She puts together dogs that were destined to be euthanized in local shelters into loving homes. She is on her way to doing that almost two-hundred times this year with her team of volunteer foster homes. This was her first event in Navarre, but it won’t be her last. Please read the story on the pet page to find out about Ellie Mae’s big adventure.
