Miss Santa Rosa County crowned at ‘World Class’ pageant
The crowning of Miss Santa Rosa County, Miss Escambia County, Miss Pensacola, Miss Pensacola Beach, Miss Milton, Miss Pace, Miss Navarre, Miss Navarre Beach and Miss Gulf Breeze was held Sunday, Aug. 27, at Gulf Breeze Middle School. 28 young women were crowned in total.

Holley Navarre Fire District approves rate increase
The Fire Commission for Holley Navarre Fire District voted to approve a rate increase for residents’ fire assessments Monday, Aug. 28, during their monthly meeting.
The now approved rate structure for the upcoming fiscal year (FY 2023-24) is expected to bring in $3 million, a comparable number to last year’s actual assessment revenue ($3,092,209). FY 2023-24 runs from Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2024.

School district responds to graffiti at Navarre High School
On Aug. 30 and 31, Navarre High School saw extra security on campus after graffiti was found in a bathroom at the school Tuesday, Aug. 29.
According to school district public information officer Dr. Tonya Shepherd, the bathroom graffiti indicated students shouldn’t attend school Aug. 30 or 31. No threat of school violence was made but an investigation began immediately following the discovery of the graffiti.

Gulf Breeze Zoo welcomes new giraffe calf
The Gulf Breeze Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a baby reticulated giraffe. Staff were on hand monitoring as Kenya, a 14-year-old giraffe, gave birth to the 6’3” 160 lb. male on July 13 shortly before midnight. The baby giraffe has not yet been officially named.

Dry weather leads to brush fires
So far in the month of August, Navarre has only received 1.47 inches of rain according to the data. In July, we received 3.71 inches of rain. Those two months do not even equal the total amount of rain in June of 8.88 inches. The dry conditions coupled with wind has allowed brush fires to spark more easily.
Monday, Aug. 21, left Holley Navarre Fire District and their partners battling three brush fires scattered across Navarre, all taking place after noon.

Gulf Islands National Seashore closes areas in Florida due to Hurricane Idalia
Gulf Islands National Seashore Santa Rosa Area including Opal Beach Area and Highway 399, and the Fort Pickens Area are closed until further notice due to storm surge from Hurricane Idalia creating standing water up to two feet deep in certain areas.

Brooks Bridge replacement project breaks ground
On Thursday, Aug. 24, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Brooks Bridge replacement project in Okaloosa County. The $171 million project includes constructing two new parallel bridges over the Santa Rosa Sound to increase bridge capacity and improve traffic flow.

City of Gulf Breeze files suit against Skanska barge blunder effects
In September 2020, Hurricane Sally landed near Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Northwest Florida suffered millions of dollars in damage. Along with structural damage in the Pensacola, Gulf Breeze and Navarre areas, the newly built Pensacola Bay Bridge, also known as the Three-mile Bridge, was partially destroyed by loose barges leading to financial damages to businesses.

HNWS opens 2024 election applications, early voting plans
The Holley Navarre Water System Inc. (HNWS) will hold its annual membership meeting and election of directors Jan. 16, 2024, in the corporate office board room at 8574 Turkey Bluff Road. The election will be opened from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This year, two directors, serving three year terms, will be elected via a “director ballot.” The members present at the annual meeting also have an opportunity to vote on an update to the Articles of Incorporation via an “articles ballot” to resolve a discrepancy between the Articles of Incorporation and the By-Laws.
