The July 4th weekend certainly went down with a bang, but it wasn’t from the fireworks shows across the region. Instead, it was rain making the big impact on the holiday weekend.

Santa Rosa County Commissioner Jim Melvin envisions construction of a four-lane bridge connecting Hwy 87 with Gulf Boulevard on Santa Rosa Island as a possible long-term solution for area traffic congestion. Santa Rosa County Commissioners discussed that idea along with other short- and long-term traffic solutions at their July 8 committee meeting, following a presentation about a recent traffic study by county traffic engineering consultant Volkert, Inc.

The counter protestors were geared up for the arrival of Westboro Baptist, a Kansas-based group renowned for inflammatory pickets at military funerals.
