FWC scientists discover new bass species
Scientists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have discovered a new species of black bass in the southeastern United States. Scientists have proposed naming the new species the Choctaw bass and recommended the scientific name of Micropterus haiaka.

Santa Rosa residents safer, healthier than neighbors
Overall, Santa Rosa County is a healthier place to live compared to other parts of the state, including peer counties with similar demographics. However, several health status indicators, including alcohol-related injuries, are unfavorable. Santa Rosa has a rate of 103.1 alcohol-related injuries per 100,000 population, compared to a 66.3 state average and 93.3 peer average.

Florida hospitals could lose federal funds
MIAMI (AP) — Hospitals nationwide could lose half a billion dollars in federal funding for uninsured patients next year under the national health overhaul. It’s a loss that will hit especially hard in states — like Florida — that decided against expanding Medicaid coverage. Cuts could jump to $4 billion in 2020, according to estimates released Monday by federal health officials.
