Santa Rosa County Commissioner Bob Cole has reversed course and decided to use recreation funds from District 2 to fund the purchase of bleachers and other equipment for the county’s June Ates Arena in East Milton. Initially, Cole recommended that the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC) use bed tax money for the purchases.

The East River Smokehouse on Highway 98 in Navarre lived up to its name last Wednesday as buildup of residue in the barbecue fire pit chimney briefly caught fire and created a lot of smoke at about 10 a.m.

During the annual county budgeting process, Supervisor of Elections Tappie Villane requested an increase in funding attributed to the upcoming 2014 election cycle.  One significant increase Villane noted during her July presentation to county commissioners was the leasing of special equipment for voters with disabilities or conditions which make it difficult to mark a traditional ballot.

Gulf Breeze City Council recently approved a project to replace all water and some gas meters in South Santa Rosa Utilities, which will take about nine months to complete. To fund the project, the city will be borrowing money from SunTrust Bank to be paid back over 12 years.

The departure of several employees from the marketing firm with whom the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC) has a contract is causing some headaches for the council, and forced a special meeting of the TDC to be called last Tuesday on short notice.

Troubles continue for Navarre businesswoman Dorothy Slye, whose Sandy Bottoms retail store, which occupied a county-owned building on Navarre Beach, is now closed.  Slye owed delinquent taxes on the property totaling $20,577.  Tax collector records show Sigma Tax LL of Aventura, Florida purchased the tax certificate, which ultimately went unsold at an Oct. 28 auction.

Since forming last year, the Southeastern Dog Hunters Association has spent thousands of hours volunteering in the community, coordinating their own events and helping other organizations and local nonprofits. Recently, SEDHA members participated in the Ronald McDonald Charities’ Annual Fire Truck Pull held on Oct. 12, and beat out 31 other teams to win first place.

Football season is in full swing, and the 2013-14 hunting season is cranking up. Heck, in Zone A, they’re already into general gun season. But for the rest of us, I’d like to cover some things you should know regarding three hunting seasons that are just around the corner: muzzleloading gun, gray squirrel and the first phase of dove.
