The COVID-19 pandemic impacted education throughout the United States. Students, teachers, parents, and administrators had to adjust to lockdowns, online learning and other disruptions to students, even after reopening schools.
Despite these challenges, the Florida Department of Education announced Jan. 13 that high school graduation rates for the 2021-2022 school year not only met pre-pandemic levels, they exceeded them across the state. Santa Rosa County was no exception.
The National Weather Service in Mobile is predicting severe weather conditions in the overnight hours of Tuesday night for our area. Santa Rosa County has been placed under an enhanced risk for severe weather.
Main threats include Tornadoes (a strong (EF2+) tornado is possible) and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph. According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, the line of storms will move east of I-65 during the overnight hours after midnight and impact the western Florida Panhandle during this time.

A crowd of 100 people gathered Thursday, Jan. 19, to witness and celebrate the groundbreaking of Destiny Worship Center’s new Navarre campus. While the campus is currently an open field, people associated with the church came together to recognize the start of construction and a new chapter.

School safety is a top priority for schools across the country, especially after tragedies like the ones at schools in Uvalde, Texas, and Parkland, Florida.
Last year, Santa Rosa District Schools decided to pursue the implementation of a guardian program, based on the state’s Coach Aaron Feis Guardian Program. The program, which is meant to add an extra layer of protection for schools, has not been fully implemented.
Finally! More than 20 years in the making, the new Santa Rosa County Courthouse began serving the First Judicial District of Florida and county courts today, Jan. 16.
A new traffic signal on U.S. 98 in Navarre at the U.S. 98 and Rosewood Drive intersection will become operational Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. The new signal is mounted horizontally on mast arms.
Since the signal is in the horizontal position, motorists with color weakness problems will need to remember red is on the left and green on the right.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left one person injured in the early morning hours Saturday, Jan. 14.
At approximately 3:15 a.m. Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting at the 5500 block of Sea Spray Court in Navarre.
