Milton woman sentenced in fatal hit-and-run
The Florida Highway Patrol reported 26-year-old Brianna Strum of Milton was sentenced Feb. 20 to more than 11 years in prison on a charge of DUI manslaughter stemming from a fatal crash April 2013 on I-10 in Escambia County. Strum entered a plea of no contest in December 2013 to the charge.

County could kick recycling contractor to curb
West Florida Recycling, which operates the county’s recycling program, is more than $50,000 behind in payments a month after promising to catch up or face termination. Commissioners are expected to end their contract with the company and take action on several other matters at today’s meeting.

Man robs Holley home after solicitation attempt
A man posing as a door-to-door salesman robbed a residence on Forester Road Sunday night, according to a Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office offense report. The man was described as a white male possibly in his 20s, 5’10 to 6-feet-tall with brown hair and an unshaven scruffy look.

Fire commissioners discuss rate increase, select new member
Navarre’s steady growth prompted Holley-Navarre Fire Commissioners to discuss Monday a proposed referendum in the upcoming general election to increase rates. Also at the meeting, the Commissioners selected Charlie Bateson to fill the seat left vacant by Shannon Stone’s resignation Feb. 4.

Group supporting Navarre’s incorporation seeks signatures
The Citizens to Incorporate Navarre Political Action Committee is actively seeking signatures in an effort to persuade county officials to put a nonbinding straw poll to gauge interest in Navarre becoming a city on the August 26 primary ballot. The group met last night at the Navarre Conference Center to provide an update on their efforts.

Animal Services Director named employee of the year
Dale Hamilton, animal services director, was recognized as Santa Rosa County’s Public Service Employee of the Year at the Feb. 13 board of county commission meeting. Hamilton was selected for his exceptional performance as interim director of animal services from the four public service employee of the quarter recipients. Along with Hamilton, the board also recognized Erin Malbech, housing program coordinator; Ed McCants, veteran services specialist and Laurie Shultz, office assistant for their outstanding service in 2013.

Dine out with your dog
Restaurants on Pensacola Beach could soon see some new patrons of the four-legged variety. The Santa Rosa Island Authority voted Feb. 12 to green-light pursuing the adoption of a state ordinance called the Dixie Cup Clary Act, which would give restaurants with outdoor eating areas the option to allow patrons to bring their pets with them as they dine.
