Gas station variance denied, again
The Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners voted Feb. 25 to deny a variance that would have allowed a new gas station to be built at 8006 Navarre Parkway.
The zoning board had unanimously voted against approving the variance two weeks ago.
Local father, grandfather struck and killed by motorist who left scene
A 50-year-old Navarre father and grandfather was killed Tuesday by a driver who hit him and fled the scene.
Robert Triplett was walking to work just before 6 a.m. when a box truck driver swerved into the bike lane on U.S. Highway 98 in front of the Navarre Walmart.
The truck fled. Florida Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information about the accident to call 850-287-8090.
Mass vaccination site opens, 1,100 to take place Wednesday
Santa Rosa County’s mass vaccination center opened Monday and plans to vaccinate 1,100 people Wednesday. That’s close to the number county officials thought they’d be handling in one week.
Residents say speeders endangering Ortega Street
A small group of citizens concerned about speeding on Ortega Street met with Commission Chair Dave Piech and representatives from the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office last week.
The citizens say that speeding is a recurring and dangerous problem along their residential street, where the speed limit is 20 miles per hour, only increasing to 30 mph as it approaches the high school.
Couple locks child out of house, tells him he’s not allowed inside
A 47-year-old Navarre man and a 44-year-old Navarre woman were arrested Feb. 18 and charged with child neglect, after refusing to let an 11-year-old child who said he was hungry into the house. The child filmed the incident, which showed that all entrances were locked, and he was not allowed to enter.
Leonardo set to land first aircraft at Whiting in early spring
U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz discussed what’s on the horizon for NAS Whiting Field in the near future during a livestream on Facebook Thursday afternoon.
Gaetz said Leonardo is partnering with the Naval airfield to bring upgrades that will significantly improve training opportunities at a base that is home to the largest air wing in the United States Navy.
A new vision for Navarre Beach
When County Administrator Dan Schebler met with department heads last year and asked them to prepare a plan to share with commissioners Feb. 23, he wasn’t specific about what he expected.
What Tourism Development Director Julie White came up with was “Navarre Beach Reimagined,” a proposal that suggests giving Navarre Beach an amphitheater, shopping area, gathering places, a playground and art in public places, among other ideas.

New courthouse will meet current needs, have room to grow for future
Within the next year, the new Santa Rosa County courthouse is expected to be complete and by next summer, court should be in session. Construction is running smoothly – on time and on budget, according to county officials Friday morning.
