Fundraiser shows support for Navarre 4-year-old with cancer
Hundreds came to Curious Apples Saturday, March 1, in support of Team Jackson, a fundraiser for a Navarre child with cancer. While they are still tallying the numbers, the effort is estimated to have already raised nearly $11,000. Online supporters also contributed to the fundraiser.

Injunction against Holley Navarre Water System dismissed, new board seated
An injunction to stop the election process of Holley Navarre Water System reached a determination Thursday, Feb. 27.
Filed Feb. 14, a few days before the HNWS annual meeting and election, the injunction aimed to prevent the water system from canceling out proxies which originated outside of the system. The water system allows proxy voting, which is when a member gives another member the right to vote on their behalf.

A periodontist on Hurlburt Field was arrested after failing to comply with officers during a traffic stop in Tiger Point Feb. 25.
Michelle Bongiovi, 59, is charged with public order crimes for failing to obey police or fire department instructions, resisting an officer and DUI.

Marcus Spanevelo could face death penalty after Presidential order
A Navarre woman’s 2022 death has reentered the spotlight as her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child was set to go on trial April 28 for allegedly kidnapping her, which resulted in her death.
The federal trial of Marcus Spanevelo, who is alleged to have transported Navarre resident Cassie Carli’s body to Alabama and buried it in a shallow grave in Springville, a 40-minute drive from Birmingham, is being examined by a capital review committee to see if he could possibly face the death penalty.

Immigration enforcement ramps up with new laws, new state board
Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet recently met in Okaloosa County to discuss issues surrounding immigration enforcement and how best to coordinate state efforts with those of the federal government.
DeSantis and the state Legislature held a special session this past month which saw the arrival of new laws focused on giving localities more authority to go after illegal immigrants, toughened penalties for those illegal immigrants found guilty of crimes such as child rape and murder, and created boards to help streamline the process.
