County to hold open house event to review new FCC broadband map
Santa Rosa County will host a drop-in open house from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Santa Rosa County Extension Office, 6263 Dogwood Drive in Milton, to discuss broadband.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has rolled out a new national broadband map and Santa Rosa County residents are urged to validate the accuracy of the information on the map. Challenges to the FCC broadband map are due by Friday, Jan. 13. View the map at broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home.

HNFD Fire Chief Norton calls it a career
After more than 40 years working in fire service, Holley Navarre Fire District Chief Ron Norton is retiring.
Norton, who has been HNFD Fire Chief for the past 12 years, announced his retirement at the Holley Navarre Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners meeting on Monday, Dec. 20. He is set to retire during the first week of January 2023.

Navarre man crashes into FHP trooper
For one Navarre man, 2023 did not get off to a great start.
At 2:50 a.m. on Jan. 1, a Navarre man, 27, crashed into a marked Florida Highway Patrol car in Fort Walton Beach. According to Florida Highway Patrol, an FHP trooper, 25, had stopped in the inside left turn lane at the North Beal Parkway and north Mary Esther Cutoff intersection for a red traffic light.

Navarre Beach Fire Rescue donates thermal imaging cameras to Munson VFD
Navarre Beach Fire Rescue recently received four new handheld thermal imaging cameras, which will help improve fire rescue effectiveness and safety.
The fire department was already in possession of two thermal imaging cameras that still worked but were an older design than the ones they were just received. In lieu of their newfound cameras, NBFR Fire Chief Danny Fureigh decided to pay it forward to another Santa Rosa County fire department, Munson Volunteer Fire Department.

Toll Relief Program begins Jan. 1
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Dec. 15 signed Senate Bill 6A, establishing the Toll Relief Program through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which will provide account credits to frequent commuters using toll roads across the state. The program will give Floridians with 35 or more toll transactions per month a 50% credit to their account.
The legislation, originally proposed by DeSantis in September of this year, was successfully passed during the recent Legislative Special Session. The Toll Relief Program begins on Jan. 1, 2023, and runs through Dec. 31, 2023.

SRC Commission prepares to debut new forum format
Beginning Monday, Jan. 9, the Santa Rosa County Commission will limit public forum to an hour before each meeting.
“We felt like this was a reasonable compromise,” Chairman Colten Wright said at the commission’s regular meeting Dec. 8. “Once again, there was never any effort to squash anyone’s First Amendment rights or anything like that.”

Sheriff’s Office receives Excelsior Award from state
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office recently received recognition as one of Florida’s best law enforcement agencies.
The Sheriff’s Office received the Excelsior Award from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation and the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission.

A case that had all of Northwest Florida, and certainly Navarre, polarized began on Monday, March 28, 2022, when Andrew Carli notified the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office (SRSO) that his daughter, Cassie, 37 of Navarre, was missing.
