Out and About
Our first Navarre Raider home game is this Friday night. We are playing Wakulla and there is a lot of history with Wakulla. There is something about their refs marching us back with every play when we played them the last time. Hopefully some of the families will be staying in the area - at least overnight. Wakulla is in Crawfordville which is south of Tallahassee. MaxPreps has ranked Wakulla 19th in the state and Navarre is ranked, 46th. We went up in the rankings by 45 points after our win over Catholic. Let’s keep ranking up.
Quick response saves homes
I would like to thank all of the Firefighters and the Forestry Department who responded to the fire in my backyard at 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Without their quick response there is a good chance my neighbors and I would have lost our houses. They were able to not only save our houses but they were able to save our fences as well. Being that close to losing our homes gives me a new understanding of what fires can do and what risks firefighters take to put them out. Thank you again for everything.
Stormwater/Drainage projects under review
Around 20 projects are being nominated for a list of initiatives for Santa Rosa County Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) plan. Next month LMS Task Force members are set to prioritize those projects, which could be funded through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).
Park restrooms move forward
Restrooms at Navarre Park will be built “by the community, for the community” according to James Dabney, committee leader for the restrooms.
Milton corn maze honors Masters champ Bubba Watson
An effort aimed to increase local tourism during the off-peak season got a huge boost last week when golf superstar and Santa Rosa County native Bubba Watson retweeted a depiction of his likeness as it will appear in 2014 Sweet Season Farms corn maze in Milton.
Big bucks for band
Being a member of the Navarre High School Raider band is not for the faint of heart. Practices are grueling with young musicians using all the parts of their brains, and bodies, to march and play for what might be hours in hot temperatures.
Watch-the-Reef TV coming soon!
Sea turtles, tropical fish, octopus and other marine creatures inhabiting the artificial reef at Navarre Beach Marine Park will soon star in worldwide broadcasts. The effort to install a live-feed underwater camera in the Gulf of Mexico just cleared another hurdle.
Island effluent reuse/discharge discussed
John Lewis, a member of the Beach Beautification Committee, drove to Milton Aug. 25 to ask commissioners why treated water can’t be used for irrigation on the island.
