State Road 87 road widening project begins

Drivers will find tree clearing in advance of the road work slated for State Road 87 between the southern boundary of Eglin Air Force Base and about 2 miles south of the Yellow River Bridge. The $18.4 million project will widen approximately 5 miles of SR 87.

Currently, an Eglin timber contractor is harvesting marketable trees in advance of construction activities.

“An estimated 4,600 tons of pine timber will be harvested by Kennedy Forest Products, an Eglin timber contractor, with the proceeds going back to Eglin,” Ryan Campbell, Eglin Timber management forester, said. “The work will take place along 6.5 miles of Highway 87 to facilitate the highway widening project. A total of 153 acres of Air Force property will be cleared. I anticipate the work being completed in approximately four weeks.”

Other additions include resurfacing, roadway striping, signage, stormwater retention and drainage upgrades. The project is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2017.
