Weather, birds slow tar mat removal

Nesting shorebirds and uncooperative weather have slowed the removal of a tar mat that was found June 21 not far from shore in the Fort Pickens Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore. U.S. Coast Guard Public Information Officer Natalie Murphy said removal efforts were temporarily suspended June 27 and have not yet resumed.
Weather and nesting shorebirds have slowed removal of a tar mat found June 21 in shallow Gulf of Mexico waters in the Fort Pickens Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
