Sweet Pea, Navarre Beach’s sea turtle ambassador, now available as a plushie

Now, visitors can take Sweet Pea home (sort of).
The center recently announced that Sweet Pea plushies are available in the NBSTCC gift shop. The items are a hot commodity, with the first bunch selling out within 12 hours of the announcement. More are being ordered.
Alex Fox, a biologist who works at the center, said NBSTCC staff first got the idea for a stuffed version of Sweet Pea from visitors, who were captivated by the turtle’s story of resilience and conservation.
“It was something we always wanted to get made,” Fox said. “It was just (a matter of) figuring out how and where, and (making sure) it resembles her and is a true reflection of her. When she first became a resident here, people were asking (for it) pretty early on.”
Sweet Pea first arrived at NBSTCC in January 2018. At the time, the turtle was 16 lbs. and had survived being tangled in fishing gear. The gear damaged her arm and paralyzed one of her back flippers. Some of the gear was also found inside her body.
The injuries led to the amputation of Sweet Pea’s front left flipper. She was taken care of for two years at Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center in Okaloosa County. Due to complications from the injuries, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) deemed her non-releasable.
Over the years, Sweet Pea has grown healthier and is active in her pool. She serves as one of the center’s animal ambassadors, a living reminder of the importance of NBSTCC’s conservation and education efforts.
A few years ago, a children’s book was published about Sweet Pea’s journey. Fox said the center sells the book too. The center plans to sell the two items together as part of a Sweet Pea package. Fox said the book and plushie make for great presents for children.
