Driving Navarre Beach Causeway? Watch out for these striking black and orange birds

| Wendy Victora Rudman

Drive along Navarre Beach Causeway and you’ll notice dozens of new visitors along the side of the road.

Black skimmers, distinctive for their bright orange beaks, are courting and nesting on the sand right next to the busy road.

Those driving along Navarre Beach Causeway in recent weeks will notice dozens of black birds with bright orange beaks squatting in the sand on either side of the road. Black skimmers are a threatened species in Florida. Photo by Dickie Williams
