Sheriff’s Office, Midway FD help rescue dog from storm drain

| Staff Reporters
Protect and serve. That’s the mantra of many law enforcement agencies, and it was exemplified July 11 in Navarre, when a dog was rescued from a storm drain by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. Assistance was provided by Midway Fire District.
A dog trapped in a storm drain is pulled out after much coaxing from Midway Fire District, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office and local residents along East Bay Boulevard.

The animal rescue began at 7:21 p.m. when Midway Fire was called out to 6152 East Bay Blvd. to assist with a trapped dog. Upon arriving, several Sheriff’s deputies and residents had made attempts to coax the dog out of the pipe with no success.

Firefighters deployed a charged hose line with a closed nozzle to gently encourage the dog toward an open manhole cover. Simultaneously, residents offered treats to help lure the animal out. According to Midway Fire, the combined efforts led to the successful retrieval of the dog.

As the dog was being removed from the storm drain, a sudden downpour began. Firefighters and residents quickly covered the animal to shield it from the rain. The dog appeared uninjured and was safely returned to the surface.

Responding units from Midway Fire included Truck 36, Battalion 35 and Engine 37.
