Set Free Refuge to hold open house at new office Oct. 27

Sitting in the freshly painted counseling room at Set Free Refuge, Inc. there is a sense of comfort and peace in the space.

Each room is decorated with care to make a calming and relaxing atmosphere for its clients. On the wall reads a sign “She designed a life She loved” and a pillow that says, “Happy Place.” No doubt this is a place where a person can find help and healing from life’s storms.

Set Free Refuge, Inc is a non-profit organization, here in Navarre, dedicated to helping survivors of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, and sex trafficking.

Executive Director Marcie Rey Landreth, MSW, RCSWI stated “Our recent move to a new location is a strategic step to enhancing our ability to provide trauma-informed services and to hire more mental health therapists focused on helping people heal from sexual trauma.” Set Free Refuge’s new location is at 8418 East Bay Boulevard, Navarre, FL 32566 with five offices and a waiting area to greet its new clients.

“We see this as an extension of what we are doing at The Refuge,” Landreth said. The Refuge is a home for young women aging out of the foster care system who are survivors of commercial sexual exploitation. “At The Refuge, our clients receive not only housing, food, case management but emotional and spiritual support, according to Landreth. “Our goal is to wrap our arms around these young women without anything in return. “We want to just love them where they are at and that’s where true healing begins”

Landreth believes that this model of love and support can be given out to sexual abuse survivors in our community. Set Free Refuge demonstrates this through its sexual assault support groups and their individual counseling services.

“Most people don’t realize that sex trafficking encompasses both elements of sexual abuse and domestic violence, but it does. Many of our survivors were victims of sexual abuse as a child, that’s the saddest part,” Landreth said. “Sexual abuse as a child or adolescence opens a doorway to future vulnerability to sex trafficking If we can help the healing process at the beginning of the abuse, then that closes the breach between the vulnerability and the trafficker.”

The first step to healing takes believing that you can, as the sign reads “She (can) with the help of others design a life she loves.”
