Turbulent transition at pier

TC’s Coastal Porch, LLC took over operation of Navarre Beach Fishing Pier Jan. 1, following what one partner described as an eventful transition.  Santa Rosa deputies responded to the county-owned pier four times Dec. 28 after previous contractor Pier, Inc.’s employees were observed using sledgehammers to demolish wooden structures on the deck.  Although one commissioner called for prosecution in the matter, two county officials later decided the demolition had been within the rights of the contractor.

November is National Adoption Month, and local foster children may be one step closer to finding a permanent home thanks to a grant received by FamiliesFirst Network of Lakeview, which provides shelter and foster care and adoption services in Northwest Florida.

Commander: Whiting considers land swap

Captain Matthew Coughlin, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Whiting Field (NASWF), provided the Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners with an update at its committee meeting Sept. 23. Commissioner Don Salter stated that on a quarterly basis Coughlin would be providing the county with reports on activities involving NASWF and the Department of Defense.

Commissioners say it’s time for a new courthouse

All five Santa Rosa commissioners agree the time has come to replace what has been called the worst courthouse in Florida. The board even seems to be in unison that the best way to fund building a new judicial facility would be placing a vote to enact a temporary local one-cent sales tax on the November 2014 ballot. The biggest question remaining at the end of a public workshop held to address the matter July 11 was where the new courthouse should be located.
