Raiders try to finish season strong

The Navarre Raiders varsity boys’ basketball team has to continue to play hard as the number of remaining games for the season continues to dwindle. The past few games the Raiders have won and lost by only a small margin. The Raiders participated in the Christmas Tournament at Pensacola Catholic over the holiday break. At the tournament, the Raiders beat Gulf Breeze High School 39-38, lost to Washington High 49-42, and lost to Escambia Charter 54-52.

Lady Raiders dominate in weightlifting sub-sectionals

The Raider girls dominated the sub-sectional meet held in Navarre on Jan. 8. The top three lifters in each weight division qualified for the sectional meet to be held at Choctaw on Jan. 22. “We had a pretty good meet,” Coach Garrett Bagley said. “Our goal was for each lifter to get one of the top three spots in each weight class and then move on to the sectionals in two weeks.”

Gulf Breeze residents Peyton and Holley Moseley were hopeful when they discovered a treatment that could finally help their daughter’s epilepsy. Ten-year-old RayAnn can have about 10 seizures in a day, and the treatment her parents are working to get her isn’t legal in Florida.

County gives recycler 30 days to fix problems

The founders of West Florida Recycling appeared before commissioners last week, apologizing for and seeking to amend what County Administrator Hunter Walker described as chronic problems. Faced with no other option, the board decided to give the company 30 days to improve operations or face contract termination. In the meantime, county staff will solicit new bids which may or may not be utilized, depending on the company’s progress.

Chamber president utilizes Google Glass for non-profit

Google has not yet released their futuristic eyewear Google Glass to the public, but Navarre Beach Chamber of Commerce president, Tony Alexander, was able to get his hands on a pair in order to help find missing children across the nation.

Derelict boat owner summoned to appear in court

Despite efforts to get his derelict boat out of the Santa Rosa Sound before his pretrial diversion agreement expired, Jeramiah Shastid was issued a notice by Santa Rosa County to reappear in court Jan. 16.

Board of Realtors takes ownership of community center

The Navarre Area Board of Realtors will take sole possession of the Navarre Community Center, located on Navarre School Road, this year as discussions about building a new community center in Navarre are still underway.

Residents petition grant action

Last week Santa Rosa County Commissioners modified a grant contract for the Navarre East sewer project, reducing the project’s funds and scope of service. Officials described it as a necessary step toward eligibility for the next funding cycle. However, some residents of the subdivision, namely those on the west side of Ridge Road who remain without sewer service, petitioned the move.
